BACKGROUND INFORMATION

NEW PROPOSAL FOR PIER 8

When the Pier 8 OMB appeal was settled last summer, the City and Waterfront Shores (the approved Pier 8 developer) and the north end neighbourhood residents who were the appellants reached a settlement mediated by the former chair of the Ontario Municipal Board.

The residents were asking for more family housing on Pier 8 so that there would be a good supply of children to support our schools and recreational facilities in the future.  The City and the developer agreed provided that a change in the configuration of the site could be approved.

The result was an agreement that Block 16 on Pier 8, next to the Discovery Centre, would be use for a signature tall building instead of a two storey institutional use.  If that project is approved, the density of the rest of Pier 8 will be reduced and the number of family units on Pier 8 substantially increased.

The concept was reviewed by NENa's planning committee over the last two weeks.  The committee have made a recommendation that the proposal be approved for further study.  The City proposes to do that.  NENa's position will be important in the next steps.  This is a clear opportunity for our Association to be at the bargaining table for a major new development.
